Sir Richard on Charlie Rose Sir Richard Branson on Charlie Rose 2/12
Don't miss Sir Richard Branson's appearance on Charlie Rose (watch the archived show at CharlieRose.com). Sir Richard had just spent the weekend with James Lovelock, and recounts Lovelock's pessimistic view on climate change and humanity's future. While together, they went through the g-force centrifuge test in preparation for Lovelock's upcoming spaceflight aboard Virgin Galactic's SpaceShipOne. Branson also talks about the importance of sugar-based ethanol fuels as opposed to corn-based fuels; (all cars in the US ran on ethanol until prohibition, when it was replaced by petroleum gasoline because ethanol is a drinkable alcohol!) He speaks of his love for planet Earth and his $25 million Virgin Earth Prize offered to the designer of a commercially viable solution to the carbon sequestration problem. When asked what he thinks his greatest achievement might be, he answers his 'Elders' program, a group of retired leaders headed by Nelson Mandela, set up to contribute their wisdom, independent leadership and integrity to tackle some of the world's toughest problems. Branson, a self-made billionaire, also speaks of the responsibility of the fortunate rich to use their wealth to create businesses and jobs, and tackle the world's most pressing problems. Quite a man.
