E.O.Wilson: "The world is full of amateurs: gifted amateurs, devoted amateurs... Anybody can pick up information in interesting places, find new species or rediscover what was thought to be a vanished species, or some new biological fact about a species already known, and can provide that right into The Encyclopedia of Life."

Copenhagen
It's been frequently said of late that the next couple of months leading up to the crucial Copenhagen Climate Conference in December could determine the fate of human civilization. Certainly this is the best chance so far to see some real action to stem the ineluctable growth of carbon emissions, with the increased public awareness following a couple years of dire findings regarding the speed of anthropogenic climate change.
It might be important to remember in dealing with Climate Warming- or maybe more accurately, Climate Weirding, that emission of long-buried carbon back into the atmosphere is only one of humankind's many pollutions of nature. The fish in our rivers are full of mercury from coal plants. Huge gelatinous mucilages are growing in the Mediterranean, while in the Pacific a continent-sized gyre of shredded garbage rotates slowly like some oceanic death-star. Thomas Friedman has lately been making the argument that both the economic collapse and the ecological collapse stem from the same business model: "underpriced risk, privatized gains, socialized losses". Catch up on the situation going into Copenhagen, and more subjects, on our "News and Resources" page.
Saturday October 24 is the "International Day of Climate Action", with demonstrations and activities in all the world's major cities. Go to www.350.org
for all the info. Curiously, the latest Pew Research survey (10/22/09) shows Americans' climate change awareness moving in the other direction- see the survey results here

Podcast: Fragility, Gaia, and the Evolution of Humanity
"Xavier Le Pichon is one of the world's leading geophysicists, and his pioneering research on plate tectonics revolutionized our understanding of how the earth works. He has also spent decades living in community with people and families facing disability and has emerged with a rare perspective on the meaning of humanity - a perspective equally informed by his scientific and personal encounters with fragility as a fundament of vital, evolving systems..."

President Obama has named Nobel Laureate Dr. Steven Chu, head of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, to be Secretary of Energy. Dr. Chu is a strong proponent of boosting scientific education and the development of alternative energy technologies to urgently combat anthropogenic climate change. Dr. Chu: "What the world does in the coming decade will have enormous consequences that will last for centuries. It's imperative that we begin without further delay."

Home - the Movie "Listen to me, please. You're like me, a homo sapiens, a 'wise human'. Life, a miracle in the universe, appeared around 4 billion years ago, and we humans only about 200,000 years ago; yet we have succeeded in disrupting the balance that is so essential to life. Listen carefully to this extraordinary story, and decide what you want to do with it."Home - The Movie.
