Thomas Berry, theologian and environmentalist, author of The Dream of the Earth and The Great Work, died in early June at the age of 94 .
From the Times obit: "Dr. Berry's books and lectures inspired a devoted lineage of academicians and environmentalists to explore the interface of religion, human nature and ecology..." (NYT profile)

Ecoversity is a non-profit educational center which explores and demonstrates concepts of sustainable living, ecological design, and responsibility for the wise stewardship of the Earth.
Established in 1999 in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Ecoversity offers a unique curriculum designed to regenerate the Earth and revitalize the human spirit.

Crisis means both danger and opportunity. The biggest empowerment is to be able to successfully re-orient oneself in the face of adversity. Humans are still around because we have been able to respond to challenges with ingenuity. Ecoversity's programming this year will emphasize a local approach to the current crisis, food security, and energy independence.

Ecoversity's Urban Gardening classes are aimed at all who would like to gain skills in gardening. Under the guidance of Ecoversity's master gardener Bob Markham, and through hands-on demonstration, we will address a host of gardening techniques starting out with understanding healthy soil. We will learn about composting, water-catchment and garden design, mulching, planting fruit trees and berry bushes, strategies for edible gardens, the role of mushroom decomposers, box gardens, and so much more.

We have a host of accomplished local teachers who will share their knowledge and experience with you in the relaxed and inspiring setting of Ecoversity among our animals, bee village, and energy park.

We recommend signing up for 6 classes or more (1 free class). Of course you are welcome to enroll in just one class, but please consider signing up for the whole season (with discount) and become a friend of Ecoversity. That will be a great way to meet kindred spirits and forge bonds that will strengthen our community in so many ways; meanwhile you will have a hand in transforming the grounds of Ecoversity. Special arrangements for children can also be made (call in advance).

The Ecoversity gardening course will culminate in a garden walk and hands-on Fall garden celebration with master gardener and spiritual teacher Wendy Johnson. Wendy is one of the founders of the Organic Farm and Garden Program at Green Gulch Farm Zen Center in Marin County, Ca. She has been teaching gardening and environmental education to the public since the early 1980s. Wendy is a mentor and advisor to the Edible Schoolyard program of the Chez Panisse Foundation and Wendy loves to engage children in the magic of gardening. President-Elect Obama has named Nobel Laureate Dr. Steven Chu, head of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, to be Secretary of Energy. Dr. Chu is a strong proponent of boosting scientific education and the development of alternative energy technologies to urgently combat anthropogenic climate change. Dr. Chu: "What the world does in the coming decade will have enormous consequences that will last for centuries. It's imperative that we begin without further delay."
