Last-Ditch Eco Play for Desperate General Motors
They used to say 'as GM goes so goes the nation'. Well, the bill has come due for 20 years of blind focus on lucrative profits from gas-guzzling trucks and SUVs. General Motors stock fell again this week, to it's lowest level since 1954. Back then it was the biggest company in the world. Now, with Japanese hybrids dominating the near future, and guzzler sales in free-fall, there's even talk of bankruptcy. GM has launched a frenzied effort to leapfrog into electrical cars; a last-ditch play, way too late. As GM goes, so goes the nation... (story: Jonathan Rauch at The Atlantic: "Electro-Shock Therapy")
Note that GM is plunging ahead with no battery solution in sight, hoping one will be found by production start; this is the backstory to McCain's proposal of a $300 million dollar prize for the development of just such a battery that GM needs to complete the Volt.
Refresher: Who Killed the Electric Car? - the movie

American Energy Policy, Asleep at the Spigot
Good chronology of the 90's, the 'lost decade for American fuel efficiency', and the subsequent paralysis under Bush as a perfect storm would take oil from $9 a barrel in 1999 to $145 a barrel today, causing the collapse of the American auto industry, and a crisis for the consumer economy. "Efforts to pass new fuel economy legislation in 2001, 2003, and 2005 went nowhere amid continued opposition by supporters of the auto industry on both sides of the aisle as well as many conservative Republicans... Veterans of those battles cite lobbying by the domestic automakers as a main factor in the failure of the legislation."

Google Aims To Spark a "Green Electricity Revolution"
Google has created a renewable energy R&D group and supports breakthrough technologies
"Lots of groups are doing great work trying to produce inexpensive renewable energy. We want to add something that moves these efforts toward even cheaper technologies a bit more quickly.Usual investment criteria may not deliver the super low-cost, clean, renewable energy soon enough to avoid the worst effects of climate change," said Dr. Larry Brilliant, Executive Director of Google.org, Google's philanthropic arm, "Google.org's hope is that by funding research on promising technologies, investing in promising new companies, and doing a lot of R&D ourselves, we may help spark a green electricity revolution that will deliver breakthrough technologies priced lower than coal." "The Bloom device is meant to be a subversive and inspirational tool for our concrete jungles. Similar to the tuft of a dandelion as the wind carries the seedling, we propose a way of dispersing seedlings with bubbles and bicycling. Seeds are co-mingled with a bubble mixture and upon pedaling to your destination , you release the floating seeds which land in cracks and crevices throughout the city streets. Over time, the seeds grow into flowers and plants to create a green "fringe" to our sidewalks and streets." (story and pics)
